Lights, Camera, Comrades is an initiative to bring light to marginalized communities experiencing a media blockade. Our first mission was to physically deliver media production equipment and skills based trainings to communities in Cuba, including University students and grassroots organizations with a priority on Black and brown, queer and trans communities.
For the inaugural trip, the initiative is working with Not Just Tourists, who provides large suitcases worth of medical supplies for each LCC comrade traveling to the chosen destination. Depending on the location, they are able to send various medical items, even wheelchairs or hospital equipment. Listed below are items the LCC comrades travel with to deliver to Cuba.
Medical supply items include:
- Examination gloves, Masks, PPE
- Antiseptics, Bandages, Wound care kits
- Syringes and disposable needles
- Scalpels, Sterile tools
- IV kits in sterile packaging
- Dental hygiene supplies
- Eyeglasses and optical supplies.
- Personal hygiene items
Lights, Cameras, Comrades also learned more about the specific impacts of the media blockade and the structural oppression while stationed on the ground. The humanitarian trip itinerary included hosting free workshops to exchange storytelling strategies, demonstrations of the photography gear, and a hospital visit to donate the medical aid. The entire humanitarian trip will be documented and shared through an exclusive in-depth look from The Left Current. The success of the experience will not be gate-kept. The hope behind this initiative is to inspire many to join the efforts, and empower many more to reclaim their narrative.
